Wayne Zeigler was born June 11, 1924 at his parents' farm in Algona, Iowa. He was the son of Wilbur James and Mildred Neva [Didriksen] Zeigler. He had one brother: Earl Milton and two sisters: Virginia Marie and Marian Neva. He was baptized at the First Congregational Church in Algona, and graduated from Algona High School. Wayne served in the Army Air Corps, where he was a B-17 pilot in World War II: flying 28 combat missions, and 4 food and aide missions. He continued on in the Air Force Reserve, where he achieved the rank of Major. Wayne was united in marriage to Eunice E. Johnson on July 22, 1945. Wayne and Eunice had four children: Paul Alan, David Wayne, Mark Timothy and Jeanette Eileen. He attended Iowa State University, in Ames, Iowa earning a Bachelor's Degree in Agronomy. After graduation, he taught agriculture to returning veterans from World War II. He then went on to work in Ag Lending with the Farmers Home Administration and then to Farmers State Bank in the Alburnett office. Wayne returned to Farmers Home Administration in the Iowa Falls office until his retirement. Following retirement, he went on to work in the real estate business. Wayne lived a life of service to his country, community, job, church, and to his wife and family. He worked as a regional supervisor for the Employee Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) helping current military members transition back into the civilian life. During the course of his life he was a member of many clubs and lodges: the KIWANIS, American Legion, VFW, Lions, Iowa Falls Airport Board, and the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, while also spearheading blood drives for many different organizations including some of the ones listed above. Wayne was a kind, gentle man with a love of life. He looked for the good in others and truly cared about his friends and neighbors. He was a man of integrity. If he said he would do something, it was done. Wayne knew how to love and was grateful for all that he and Eunice shared together.
