Maynard W. Rieks Obituary
Maynard Rieks, 96, of Iowa Falls, Iowa, and formerly of Owasa, Iowa, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013, at Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls. Funeral services for Maynard Rieks will be 10:30 am Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 313 Lee Lane, Iowa Falls, Iowa. A time of visitation will be one hour before services at the church on Friday. Burial will be at the Northlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery, Iowa Falls, with military honors provided by Hyman Peavey American Legion Post # 188, Iowa Falls. The Linn's Funeral Home, 1521 Washington Avenue, Iowa Falls, Iowa, is handling the arrangements.
Maynard Walter Rieks was born July 6, 1917, at Hubbard, Iowa, the son of Chris and Esther [Tintjer] Rieks. When he was 2 years old the family moved to a farm north of Alden, Iowa. He attended country school through the 8th grade. He farmed with his parents and on April 24, 1942, he enlisted into the United States Army. He was discharged on October 19, 1945, after serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and in the India-
Burma-China Theatre. He received the Air Medal while serving with the 14th Air Force. While serving 2 years in China, India, and Burma, he was a Technical Sergeant Engineer, Gunner, and Mechanic on the B-25 aircraft.
Maynard was baptized and confirmed June 8, 1947, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Alden. On September 22, 1948, he was married to Doris Klein also at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. To this union two sons were born: Bruce and Barton. The family farmed north of Alden until 1956 and then moved to a farm east of Owasa, Iowa where he retired. He was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, Iowa Falls.
Maynard Rieks is survived by his sons: Bruce Rieks [Colleen] of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Barton Rieks of rural Iowa Falls, Iowa; two grandchildren: Shelby Rieks and Garrett Rieks; two step-grandchildren: Hannah Saland [Curt] and Nick Kollasch; two great grandchildren: Lydia Saland, Lila Saland; two sisters: Shirley Rotgers of Eldora, Iowa, Marian Hazelwood of Kansas; a brother Lavern Rieks of Alden, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents: Esther and Chris Rieks; his wife: Doris Rieks; his brother: John Rieks; a nephew: Kevin Rotgers; and a niece: Vicky Rotgers.
