Joan Carol Schear was born February 2, 1934 in the Hampton Hospital to Joseph Clifford and Margaret Oneta [Worley] Schear. She attended the Hampton Community School District, graduating in 1952 she then attended the Iowa Teachers College. On September 14, 1957 she was united in marriage to Donald Dean Held, and to this union two children were born: Rick Donald and Roxann “Missy” Held. During her life, she worked at many places, including: a bookkeeper at John Deere in Hampton, in parts at John Deere in Geneva, J&J Interior, Koenen and Koenen Chiropractic, and Midwest Meter. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Hampton, Iowa and St. Peter’s UCC in Rural Geneva, Iowa, she was also a member of the Mother’s Club. Joan loved reading, and for a while she would spend one day a week reading at the library. She enjoyed baking, entertaining friends and family, and loved shopping. Joan would have her hair done every week and would never leave her house without looking proper.
Joan Held is survived by her children: Rick [Debra] Held of Geneva, Iowa, Roxann “Missy” [James] Slocum of Hampton, Iowa; her sisters: Sharon Schear of Hampton, Iowa, Janet [Roger] Tomkins of Lancaster, Missouri, and Marilyn Nelsen of Indianola, Iowa; five grandchildren: Heather Vierkandt, Hilary Linn, Eric Held, Joseph Slocum, Jenna Slocum; and 9 great-grandchildren. Joan Held was preceded in death by her parents: Joseph and Margaret “Oneta” Schear; her husband: Donald Held; a great-grandchild: Harlyn Rickelle Linn, and her brother-in-law: Jim Nelsen
