Charles Smuck Jr., 98, of Hubbard formally of Buckeye, Iowa passed away Thursday, February 18, 2021 at the Heritage Care Center in Iowa Falls, Iowa. Funeral Service will be 11:00 am Thursday February 25, 2021 at the Linn’s Funeral Home Chapel 1521 Washington Avenue, Iowa Falls, Iowa. with visitation from 10:00 - 11:00 am prior to services. Burial will be at Sheppard Cemetery, Union, Iowa.
Charles Smuck Jr. born November 22, 1922 on the family farm near Buckeye, Iowa. He was the son of Charles Sr. and Anna (Tintjer) Smuck.
Charles grew up in the Buckeye township of Hardin County and attended rural Buckeye schools #3 and #4. He helped his father farm, and at an early age helped neighbors during harvest season. On February 20, 1943, Charles was united in holy marriage with Barbara Madole of Buckeye, by Rev. W.C. Fluscher at Webster City, Iowa. God Blessed this marriage with a son, Jim. In 1943 Charles took a job as a farmhand and they moved to a home near Garden City. Chuck knew the meaning of hard work, and enjoyed many happy times with family and friends with a fishing pole in his hands. In January of 1945, he was called to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was stationed in Texas and in the far east theater and participated in the Liberation of the Phillippines. He was discharged from the Army October 27, 1946. Charles never disclosed any part of the war in which he had served.
Upon returning home, he again working for a farmer, Wayne Schwartz in Buckeye Township. Charles retired in 1987. He and Barbara purchased a home and moved to Hubbard, Iowa. There he enjoyed his yard work and garden.
Most of all he loved the Holiday gatherings with family and playing cards with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The joy when he could see and show his great-great grandchildren to others.
Charles was a lifetime member of the VFW of Buckeye Post 1886.
Charles Jr. is survived by a son: Jim (Janice) Smuck of Buckeye; three grandchildren: Christy (Brent) Hodnefield, Kim DeVries, and Bradley (Jacqueline) Smuck; seven great-grandchildren: Arial, Jamie, Brice, Dakota, Sierra, Austin, and Clara; two great-great grandchildren: Oliver and Allison.
Charles Jr. was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Marie (Madole) Smuck; his parents: Charles Sr. and Anna Smuck; one sister: Marjorie Clark; three brothers William, Everett, Robert, and two half-brothers Darrell and Murl Smuck; one grand-son-in-law: Rodney DeVries.
