Shirley Welden Obituary

Shirley Irene Welden, 86, of Iowa Falls, Iowa passed away Monday, March 25, 2019 at the Scenic Manor Nursing Home in Iowa Falls. Private family services for Shirley Welden were held. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please send memorials to: Shirley Welden Memorial; c/o Linn’s Funeral Home; 1521 Washington Ave.; Iowa Falls, Iowa 50126. Memorials received will be sent to the Calkins Nature Center and the Iowa Falls Boat Club.

Shirley Irene House was born October 2, 1932, to Richard Eugene and Phoebe “Nellie” Ellen [MacKenzie] House. She attended the Webster City School District. On June 20, 1950 she was united in marriage to David Parmelee Welden, and to this marriage three children were born: Steve, Cheryl, and Beverly. During her life she owned and operated the Glass Works, Spoken Wheel Cyclery, and the Cabin Cove Bed and Breakfast. She was a member of the Iowa Falls Chamber of Commerce, Isabella Literary Society, and the Hotel Motel Tax Board. Shirley and David are members of the First United Methodist Church in Iowa Falls and she volunteered at the CWU Thrift Store. She was instrumental in the Cemetery Walk and the Garden Walk in Iowa Falls, which started with her love of gardening. She was a founding member of the Iowa Falls Boat Club, along with volunteering many hours and supporting the Boat Club for many years. Out at Calkins Nature Center, she donated the Shirley’s Butterfly Pavilion, ensuring that many generations may enjoy the butterflies. Shirley also worked hard at getting many of the bronze statues that you see around Iowa Falls, including statues at the library, and the Bill Riley statue in Estes Park.

Shirley Welden is survived by her husband: David Welden of Iowa Falls, Iowa; three children: Steve [Jacqueline “Jacque” Lagerquist] Welden of Huntsville, Alabama, Cheryl “Cheri” [Scott] Jensen of Golden, Colorado, and Beverly “Bev”  [Joe Smith] Welden of Iowa Falls; four grandchildren: Meghan, Kimberly, Heidi, and Holly; four great-grandchildren; and a brother: Donald Richard House of Sun City West, Arizona. Shirley Welden was preceded in death by her parents: Richard and Phoebe “Nellie” House.
