Russell Eugene Meyer was born September 7, 1936, at Ellsworth Hospital in Iowa Falls to Kasper Carl and Minnie Louise [Graff] Meyer. He attended the Franklin County Country Schools in Lee Township, and graduated from the Iowa Falls Community School District in 1955. Russell’s life revolved around faith, family, and farming.  He was a member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Alden, where he served as an elder and trustee for many years.  His love of family took him to many sporting events, dance recitals, plays, and concerts.  Neva convinced him to occasionally get off the tractor and travel. They made trips from Alaska to Florida, along with an annual fishing trip to Minnesota. Farming was at the very core of Russell’s being.  In high school he was an active member of the FFA. He farmed in Franklin County for more than 40 years, where he raised corn, soybeans, sheep, pigs, and numerous feeder lambs.  Along with farming, Russell spent over 20 years on the ASCS board and was a long time member of the REC board. He also served as an election official in Lee Township. Russell was very mechanical-minded and could fix anything.  He was a very forward thinker in conservation and incorporated wetlands, terraces, and became one of the first to use geothermal in the county. Making new friends came naturally to Russell, with his booming laugh, contagious smile, and easy-going personality.  Once he met you, he never forgot you.  Even when his medicals struggles began, his memory was impeccable.

Russell Meyer is survived by his five children: Randall [Shauna] Meyer of Iowa Falls, Iowa, Laurie [T.J.] Norman of Iowa Falls, Linda [Daniel] Smith of Tampa, Florida, Tammy [Todd] Merklin of Iowa Falls, and Keith [Jill] Meyer of Hudson, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister: Mary Lou [Paul] Mumm of Ames, Iowa, Dale [Rita] Meyer of Burnsville, Minnesota, and Ret. Lt. Col. Kurtis [Jill] Meyer of Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas. Russell Meyer is preceded in death by his wife: Neva Meyer; and his parents: Kasper and Minnie Meyer.
