Myron Evans was born August 6, 1933, to Marion and Ruby Moore Evans near Popejoy. He graduated from Popejoy High School in 1951 as valedictorian. He joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. Following his honorable discharge, Myron attended Ellsworth College and the University of Northern Iowa, obtaining his bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education. He taught English, was the high school guidance counselor, and was basketball statistician at Alden High School for over thirty years. He enjoyed sports, especially watching girls’ 6-on-6 basketball. Following retirement, Myron cared for his mother, Ruby. As a master gardener, he spent countless hours tending numerous gardens. His gladiolus were stupendous. He belonged to the Alden Methodist Church and was an active member of the Popejoy United Methodist church where he helped in many ways, including serving at the church’s ice cream socials. He faithfully visited shut-ins and care center residents, taking them church bulletins, flowers and produce from his gardens. Myron was known for his dry wit, and he had a mind like a steel trap, recalling not only former students but the years they graduated and the books they enjoyed reading in his classes. Myron was a proud AA member. He supported public radio with his annual “Gouge Myron” matching challenge during pledge week. He enjoyed theater productions and was a voracious reader. Myron was a caring, kind, and generous person.

Myron was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and Marion, and by his siblings: Robert, Marjorie, Burl, Mabel, Glen, and infant brother Merle, and Louise, a special sister-in-law. He is survived by many much-loved nieces and nephews and their families.
